UC San Diego Track Meet Attracts Ex-Olympians
UC San Diego will conduct its first of two spring invitationals Saturday at its 1-year-old all-weather track, and, like last year’s meets, several world-class athletes will take part.
Al Joyner, who earned a medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in the triple jump, will attempt a comeback, but in the hurdle events.
Another former Olympian, John Marshall, who ran the marathon in 1984, also will begin a comeback and run the 800 meters.
Other former Olympians include: shot-putter Ramona Pagel, the American record holder in the event, Joaquim Cruz, who will run the 800; and Jose Luis Barbosa, who will compete at 1,500 meters.
Also competing will be French pole vaulter Phillipe D’Encausse, who cleared 18-9 indoors earlier this year, and fellow countryman Pascal Lefevre, the No. 10 javelin thrower in the world last summer with a mark of 278-2.
Field events begin at 11 a.m. and the first track event, the men’s 5,000 meters, will get under way at noon. Admission is free.
BASEBALL
UCSD won its fifth game in its past seven outings by defeating NAIA District 3 leader, Southern California College, 5-1, in an away game.
Brent Hansen struck out eight for UCSD (12-16).
UCSD had three hitters go two for four: Anthony Sanchez, who had an RBI and a double, Steve Nowlan, who knocked in two runs; and Ernie Isola, who drove in one.
SCC fell to 22-13.
MEN’S TENNIS
For first time in school history, Point Loma Nazarene clinched the Golden State Athletic Conference title by defeating Azusa Pacific, 7-2, in a road match.
PLNC (12-3, 7-0) got off to a slow start, losing the first two doubles matches.
After that, PLNC won everything else and cruised to its eighth consecutive team victory.
That his team fell behind early did not surprise Coach Rich Hills.
“All year we’ve been winning with depth and in each match it has been just a matter of whose turn it’s going to be,” he said. “And today it was just a matter of time to see which ones were going to play well, and sure enough, they came through.”
Sean Willette won at No. 3 singles and has captured 11 singles matches in a row. Willette also won at No. 1 doubles with John Norton.
Azusa fell to 11-5, 5-3.
