Claremont : City to Annex Tract
Overriding opposition from Padua Hills residents who fear “mansionization,” the City Council voted unanimously to annex a tract that includes 1,345 acres the city intends to buy for development as a residential community.
The annexation request for the unincorporated area north of Foothill Boulevard and northeast of the city limits will be submitted to the Local Agency Formation Commission of Los Angeles County.
The development, Claremont Hillsides, would include an open public recreation area and the historic Padua Hills theater building at 4467 Via Padova. The property and the theater are owned by Padova-Padua Inc. The city plans to buy the land and is considering five developers as partners in the $1.8-million venture.
Council members assured protesting residents and landowners that the city would consider their concerns, among them the style and size of houses to be built on the property.
