Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Breast Implant Tied to Cancer of Liver
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A type of cosmetic breast implant used by thousands of American women breaks down and produces a chemical that has been shown to cause liver cancer in laboratory animals, the New York Times said in its Sunday editions. Food and Drug Administration scientists estimate that 3 million U.S. women have breast implants and one-quarter of those implants are the kind tied to the cancer risk, the paper said. The implants, made by a subsidiary of Bristol-Meyers Squibb Co., are sold under the names Meme and Replicon.
