COLLEGE ROUNDUP : De La Maza Keeps Canyons Close in Race for WSC Title
Roland De La Maza allowed only four hits and struck out 10 to help College of the Canyons beat visiting Valley, 5-1, Saturday and remain within a half-game of first-place Cuesta in the Western State Conference baseball race.
Canyons (16-14-1, 11-4 in conference play) will play host to Cuesta next Thursday.
Against Valley (7-21-1, 4-11), Canyons’ Scott Roth doubled twice and Jon Beauchemin hit his second home run of the season.
In other baseball games:
Glendale 12, Santa Monica 4--Host Glendale scored five times in the eighth to ensure its seventh win in its past 10 WSC games.
Gary Vlcek (5-4) threw his fourth complete game of the season, striking out four.
Glendale (15-15, 7-7) had 15 hits with Jose Robles and Victor Ramirez collecting three hits each. Robles had two RBIs, as did John McCoy and Jim Aiwasian.
The Master’s 9, Biola 2--Master’s beat Biola for the fourth time in four games this season.
Sheldon Sparks and Craig Johnson had three hits each for Master’s (18-13, 11-5) in the NAIA District 3 game. Johnson drove in three runs, and Andy Martin added two hits. Mike Smith (4-3) struck out eight and walked two to pick up the win in a complete-game performance.
Biola, which has lost 12 consecutive games, is 8-21, 5-13.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Stanford 84, CS Northridge 44; Stanford 78, Nevada Reno 44; CS Northridge 68, Nevada Reno, 43--Jeff Dunn won the shotput, and Chris Perry and John Gallagher finished second in the long jump and discus, respectively, for Northridge in a double-dual meet at Stanford.
Dunn put the shot 52 feet 6 3/4 inches to lead a 1-2-3 Northridge finish, while Perry leaped a season best of 24-2 1/2. Gallagher threw 168-0 in the discus.
