Roper Rallies USD to Triton Tournament Win
Staci Roper’s double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday gave University of San Diego a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego in the third annual Triton Classic softball tournament at UCSD.
UCSD was the two-time defending tournament champion.
Aimee Reinard and Melissa Reinard singled with one out in the seventh. Marianne Stahl pinch-ran for Aimee Reinard and scored on Roper’s double.
Tiffany Wasilewski (12-3) earned the win for USD (19-11). She allowed five hits and struck out one. Dianna Moreno (7-5) took the loss for UCSD (15-14). She allowed six hits and struck out one.
TRACK
UCSD’s Scott Sargeant, the defending NCAA Division III national hammer champion, set school records in both the discus and the hammer at the UCSD Track and Field Invitational. Sargeant threw the hammer 202 feet 7 inches and the discus 168-8. He won both events by more than 12 feet.
UCSD’s Jennifer Jagielski set a school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a first-place 1 minute 5.14 seconds. Teammate Denise McFayden qualified for the NCAA Division III nationals in the 1,500 meters.
BASEBALL
USD, which broke a six-game losing streak and eight-game conference streak Saturday, won its third consecutive West Coast Conference baseball game, sweeping a doubleheader against Nevada Reno.
USD (16-23-2, 9-13) beat Nevada (17-20, 7-16) in the first game, 5-3, and took the second, 9-8, after overcoming a 7-1 fifth-inning deficit. The Toreros scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the seventh, capped by Josh Stepner’s RBI single. Pat Crema relieved Sean Durbin with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth and recorded his first save of the year.
Chris Collins saved the first game for pitcher James Ferguson (3-6) by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and pitching a scoreless seventh. It was Collins’ fifth save of the season. Dave Pingree had a two-run double and Granite Hills grad John Fenn had two RBIs.
Christ College Irvine scored a run in the top of the ninth against Point Loma Nazarene to win the first game, 4-3, and scored three in the ninth to take the second, 6-3, in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Rodney Williams went three for four in the first game. Rich Miller homered in the second game for PLNC (14-22, 1-11), which went extra innings. CCI is 21-1-1, 7-4.
CREW
The varsity 8 women from UCSD covered the 2,000-meter Mission Bay course in 5:55.3 to win the San Diego City Championships, thus winning the Wyatt Cup for an unprecedented third consecutive year.
UCSD was well ahead of second-place USD, which clocked 6:07.2.
The men’s varsity 8 race was much closer. San Diego State won in 5:02.6 and UCSD took second at 5:03.6.
MEN’S TENNIS
UCSD, ranked eighth in Division III, swept in doubles and got singles victories from Chad Morse, Jeff Bethard and Mike Rintala to beat ninth-ranked Pomona Pitzer, 6-3. UCSD is 7-9.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Point Loma Nazarene scored an 8-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino as the Crusaders won all six singles matches in straight sets. Those scoring decisive victories were Monica Clang, Sue Woodling, Tiffany Puckett, Eydie Pitney, Christa Stutz and Sue DeVol. PLNC is 10-8, San Bernardino is 10-9.
