MISSION VIEJO : Council OKs Repair of Collapsed Slope
One year after an earth bank near Mission Viejo Mall collapsed and threatened the inside lanes of Interstate 5 with tons of mud, permanent steps to repair the slope were approved last week by the City Council.
The council authorized grading permits and accepted $115,000 in bonds for contractors to permanently shore up the unstable slope.
After the slope began failing in April, 1990, contractors hired by the owner of the mall, the Edward DeBartolo Corp., excavated portions of the property to temporarily relieve the pressure on the top of the slope.
A consultant’s report said the mudslide could have been caused by several conditions, including overwatering of the property, excessive ground water and the claylike composition of the soil.
