United Way Falling Short of Fund Goal by $12 Million
The United Way of Greater Los Angeles said Monday it expects to raise $90 million during its 1990-91 campaign, $12 million short of its goal.
“While we are disappointed not to reach our goal (of $102 million), we are proud of our accomplishments,” said Herbert L. Carter, United Way board chairman. “This campaign was conducted in an extremely difficult environment as a result of the recession, rising unemployment, shrinking corporate profits and the decline in consumer confidence because of the war in the Persian Gulf.”
United Way raised a record $93 million last year and distributed more than $77.2 million to local agencies, Carter said. With this year’s anticipated shortfall, allocations to member agencies could be reduced by as much as 17%, he said.
