YORBA LINDA : Link With an Italian Sister City Proposed
A citizens group is proposing that Yorba Linda become a sister city with an Italian community.
The City Council recently gave the group $384 to file an application to Sister Cities International to link Yorba Linda with one of four cities in Italy. The council will pick one of the cities at a future meeting.
“We believe this is an opportune time to develop a sister-city relationship,” Kandy Petillo, one of 30 residents seeking the sister-city relationship, told council members. “Establishing and maintaining the one-to-one contact is one of the best steps a city can take.”
She added that the city has gained in prestige with its growth in population over the past decade and with last year’s opening of the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace.
Under the program, the two cities would participate in each other’s cultural and social activities. In addition, council members would be expected to make visits at their own expense or through donations to local sister-cities groups.
Petillo told council members that Sister Cities International recommended an Italian city because parts of Italy are similar in climate to Yorba Linda. In addition, the organization is recommending Italian cities to coincide with next year’s 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to America, she said.
