Bowser Wins MVP Award for Northridge Basketball
Senior center Todd Bowser was named most valuable player at the Cal State Northridge basketball-awards dinner Tuesday night at The Odyssey restaurant in Granada Hills. The 6-foot-7, 300-pound Bowser, formerly of Montclair Prep, averaged 9.9 points and 5.5 rebounds a game.
Both averages were second best on a team that went 8-20 in its first season at the NCAA Division I level. Bowser, a fifth-year senior who also earned the Kiwanis Sportsmanship Award, was sorely missed the last eight games of the season when he played only sparingly because of a shoulder injury.
The most-improved-player award went to Martin Smith, a freshman from St. Bernard High who averaged five points in 9.5 minutes a game.
Kirk Scott, a senior from Morgan Hill, Calif., and the comedian of the team, earned the most-inspirational-player award.
Sean Davis, a junior reserve from El Camino Real High, was named best defensive player and freshman Peter Micelli was presented with the coaches’ award. Micelli, of Beverly Hills, was the only player on the team who did not miss a practice because of illness or injury.
