City Will Have Rose Parade Float
The Carson City Council voted Tuesday to notify Rose Parade officials that the city will again enter a float in the New Year’s Day extravaganza.
Citing the city’s recent fiscal woes, council members had doubted whether any municipal money should be pledged for a float. The city, which recently cut some probationary jobs and trimmed other services, has had an entry in the Tournament of Roses Parade since 1977.
After some debate, the council voted 3 to 1 to guarantee city funds to pay for a float. However, they said they expect the Carson Rose Float Assn. and other volunteer groups to raise all the necessary money. The 1992 float is expected to cost at least $60,000.
Councilman Mike Mitoma cast the dissenting vote, saying the plan jeopardizes city funds.
So far, the float association has raised about $8,000. On Tuesday, the Keystone Women’s Club donated $500.
Last New Year’s Day, the city’s float, “Fun on the Move,” was awarded the Governor’s Trophy for best depiction of life in California. The float featured Betty Boop in a hot yellow convertible.
