SOUTH BAY ASSEMBLY DISTRICT DEFICITS

Based on 1990 Census figures, Los Angeles County is likely to lose as many as two seats in the 80-member state Assembly as part of the reapportionment of legislative districts. Currently, the county is represented by all or part of 28 Assembly districts. In a pattern similar to that for state Senate seats, the boundaries of coastal Assembly districts are expected to be shifted east and south, pulled by population increases in fast-growing inland areas. The new Assembly districts must be redrawn to each represent 372,000 people. The amount a district is above or below that number could determine how dramatically it is redrawn. The following chart, based on legislative figures, shows how current Assembly districts encompassing all or part of the South Bay compare to that 372,000 figure.

District Represented by Number below 372,000 population 49 Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) 52,380 50 Curtis Tucker Jr. (D-Inglewood) 46,638 51 Gerald N. Felando (R-San Pedro) 69,298 53 Richard E. Floyd (D-Carson) 43,476 57 Dave Elder (D-San Pedro) 2,283
