LAGUNA NIGUEL : Earth Day Exhibit to Include Local Fossils

It may be a while before a proposed science museum is opened in the area, but local paleontology buffs can see several fossils earmarked for the museum at a special Earth Day showing today.

The fossils, along with displays from about 50 environmental organizations, can be viewed at the Plaza de la Paz shopping center on La Paz Road near Aliso Creek Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The highlight of the fossil display is the nearly intact skull of a baleen whale that scientists estimate swam in the waters covering present-day Laguna Niguel more than 10 million years ago.

The whale skull and several other fossils on exhibit were found at South County construction sites. The fossils have been stored in local warehouses and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, awaiting permanent display in the proposed Orange County Museum of Natural History.
