Bechtel’s Bookings Fell in 1991: Bechtel Group, calling 1990 “a difficult year in the engineering-construction marketplace,” said in its annual report that the value of new projects booked last year dropped 12%, to $4.8 billion, from the year before. However, the value of work completed rose 11% to $5.6 billion. The privately held company, based in San Francisco, said many projects were put on hold when the war buildup began in the Middle East. However, contracts for work in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia should help boost 1991 bookings. The report noted that Bechtel has a work force of 32,500, up from 27,800 the year before.
