NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : 911 Operators Settle Suit on Wage Bias
More than seven years after they sued New York City charging pay discrimination, 911 system operators won a more than $7-million settlement. The accord calls for more than $4 million in back pay and more than $2 million in pay increases and bonuses in the new fiscal year for about 2,000 past and present 911 operators. Most of the operators are black women. They sued in 1984 charging they were paid far less than their white male counterparts who worked as Fire Department dispatchers.
