Crespi’s Marino Kept Off Team
Crespi High’s run to the top of the Mission League baseball standings has been accomplished largely without senior pitcher Rick Marino, who has been placed on “disciplinary probation,” according to Crespi Athletic Director Paul Muff.
Marino, expected to form a potent one-two pitching punch with sophomore Jeff Suppan, was called before the school’s disciplinary board March 22 on a school-related matter and prohibited from participating in extracurricular activities for the remainder of the semester.
Crespi Coach Scott Muckey said he learned of the disciplinary action March 26. The Celts are 12-7, 6-1 and in first place in the league.
“It was nothing to do with off-campus behavior or baseball,” Muff said. “It was an in-school situation requiring in-school discipline.”
Marino, who batted .386 and drove in 20 runs as a junior, has been replaced in the rotation by submarining right-hander Phillip Aghajanian. Aghajanian is 4-1 with an earned-run average of 3.24.
