Hawthorne Considers Drinking Ban

A measure that would prohibit drinking in public, except in restaurants and other licensed establishments, was introduced by the Hawthorne City Council Monday.

City Manager James H. Mitsch said the measure is needed because current city code does not specifically prohibit the drinking of alcoholic beverages on public sidewalks, streets and school grounds.

“This is something we should have had on the books for a long time,” Mitsch said, pointing out that there is a prohibition against drinking at public parks and in city buildings, such as City Hall.

The measure, scheduled for a final vote at the May 13 council session, would make public drinking a misdemeanor offense.
