Kuwait to Cool Ties With 4 States That Backed Iraq
CAIRO — Kuwait’s first postwar government will downgrade its diplomatic ties with four Arab states that supported Iraq during the Persian Gulf War, a senior Kuwaiti official said Wednesday.
Kuwait is also blocking the Palestine Liberation Organization’s return to its embassy in Kuwait city, the official said.
The official, who requested anonymity, told United Press International that the decision to downgrade diplomatic ties to “the lowest level” with Jordan, Yemen, Sudan and Algeria was made earlier this month, but the Kuwaiti government has so far not made the decision public.
As for the PLO, the official said Kuwait has not yet responded to a request by the organization to reopen its embassy in Kuwait city, as a reflection of the emirate’s anger toward PLO leader Yasser Arafat for his pro-Iraqi stand during the Gulf crisis.
