Aztec Quarterback Question Still Unanswered

Spring football ended at San Diego State Wednesday with a scrimmage and a question.

The scrimmage, Coach Al Luginbill said, was the best in the three springs he has been at the school.

The question, meanwhile, is the same one that loomed as the Aztecs began the spring: Who will play quarterback, Cree Morris or David Lowrey?

“I need a little more time,” Luginbill said. “If they are still equal in the fall, I’ll make a decision then. We will not have two quarterbacks. We will go with one. If he doesn’t get it done, we’ll go with the other one.”

Morris, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, completed 14 of 28 passes for 119 yards in the intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday.

Lowrey, a 6-0 sophomore who couldn’t participate in contact work until 1 1/2 weeks ago because of a broken jaw suffered in a fraternity fight, completed nine of 24 passes for 92 yards. He also threw one interception.

Neither directed the offense to a touchdown when they were in, although Morris was better with the team in scoring position.

Morris has been a little more consistent, he had a better scrimmage Wednesday . . . so, he must be the leader coming out of the spring, right?

“No,” Luginbill said. “Off of today’s performance, he would have the advantage going into the fall.”

Neither quarterback would admit to disappointment at not winning the job outright.

“(Luginbill) didn’t name one, right?” Morris said. “That doesn’t mean I’m not No. 1, right?”

Said Lowrey: “I like (my chances). I think I can improve in the summer.”

Morris said he started slowly this spring but improved as the time went along.

“The first two weeks were the roughest time I’ve had in football,” Morris said. “The last week and a half, I’ve still been inconsistent, but I’ve been making the proper reads and I’ve cut down on turnovers.”

Kicker Andy Trakas had a hot day Wednesday, making five field goals in five attempts. He hit from 42, 35, 33, 22 and 31 yards.

“I feel pretty good,” he said. “I have a new snapper and a new holder . . . that’s really tough. You’ve got to blend together, it takes time to build confidence.”

Thomas Fletcher replaced Jason Bill as the long snapper and Larry Maxey replaced Jimmy Raye as the holder.

“It’s just a matter of reps,” Trakas said. “You’ve got to get your reps and get in a groove.”
