PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Olsen’s Slam Caps Fullerton Comeback Over Sunny Hills
D.C. Olsen’s second home run of the game--a grand slam--powered Fullerton to a 7-4 victory over Sunny Hills in a Freeway League game Wednesday at Fullerton High School.
With Fullerton trailing, 4-3, Olsen hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. Olsen hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Fullerton a 2-0 lead.
Ladd Brunner (1-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for the victory for Fullerton (8-9, 3-7 inleague).
The loss was Sunny Hills’ first in the league this season.
In another Freeway League game:
La Habra 4, Sonora 3--Matt Smith had three hits, including a home run and a double, for host La Habra (9-5, 7-3), which led, 4-1, before Sonora scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 3, Santa Margarita 2--Bill Blanton hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie for Mater Dei (10-8, 5-3). Mater Dei took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Dave Knuff’s two-run home run.
Bishop Amat 10, Servite 6--Cliff Mierendorf hit two doubles and a triple, scored twice and had two RBIs for visiting Servite (9-10, 3-5).
In the Empire League:
Esperanza 15, Loara 1--David Newhan, Jon Pitts and Rich Hills each homered for visiting Esperanza (18-2, 8-2). Ryan Filbeck (1-0) pitched four innings for the victory.
Katella 15, Cypress 4--Katella scored nine runs on nine hits in the top of the seventh inning. With the score tied, 4-4, in the sixth inning, Katella scored two runs on a two-out error for a 6-4 lead. Orlando Gonzales had three hits and three RBIs for Katella. Danny Flanagan had two hits and scored twice for host Cypress (3-14, 2-8).
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 7, Western 2--Mike Ryan had two hits and two RBIs and Pat Simec (4-2) struck out five in a three-hitter for host Brea-Olinda (11-9, 7-3).
Valencia 11, Anaheim 6--Ryan Roskelly had a home run, Jason Secoda had a two-run home run and three RBIs and Justin Jimenez had four hits for visiting Valencia (9-8, 6-4). With the Tigers leading, 8-5, Eric Petzoldt relieved starter Eric Vasquez (5-3) with runners on first and third and none out in the bottom of the sixth. Petzoldt worked out of the jam and pitched a perfect seventh to earn his second save of the season.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 4, Saddleback 1--Matt Palaferri (6-2) pitched a five-hitter, struck out five and had two hits for Newport Harbor. Chris Bowen had three hits and one RBI and Aaron McKown had two hits and scored a run for visiting Newport Harbor (9-8, 7-3).
University 9, Woodbridge 6--Steve Hagins’ sixth-inning triple drove in two runs to put University (6-14, 3-7) ahead to stay. Justin Drizos and Troy Wuertz each hit home runs for host Woodbridge (4-10, 2-8).
Corona del Mar 10, Tustin 4--C.W. Ramsay pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits for visiting Corona del Mar (9-8-1, 5-4-1).
