Anne (Howard) Caulfield; Retired Actress

Anne (Howard) Caulfield, whose 37-year acting career began as a child star in 1929, has died in a Sun Valley hospital. She was 66.

A longtime Lake View Terrace resident, Mrs. Caulfield died Monday of a cerebral hemorrhage, said her son-in-law, Lewis Snow.

Born Anne Howard in Chicago, she came to California in 1929 and appeared that year in “Sunny Side Up.” A child star with Fox Studios, she appeared in about 75 movies, including “Great Expectations” (1934), “Angels With Dirty Faces” (1938), “The Little Princess” (1939) and “Lorna Doone” (1951). She also appeared in some British films, on radio, local stage and had recurring parts on television’s “Perry Mason” and “Gunsmoke.”

She retired from acting in 1966 and became active in civic affairs. She was a charter member of both the East Valley Horse Owners Assn. and the Lake View Terrace Home Owners Assn. She was a member of the Lake View Terrace Improvement Assn., Lake View Terrace Garden Club and Lake View Terrace Tearers, a senior citizens’ club.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Snow of Lake View Terrace, and one granddaughter. Her husband, Leonard Caulfield, died in 1980.

A memorial service is planned today at 3 p.m. at the Lake View Terrace Recreation Center at 11075 Foothill Blvd. The Neptune Society in Burbank is handling the arrangements. Contributions can be made in Mrs. Caulfield’s name to an animal protection organization of the donor’s choice.
