Team USA defeated Switzerland at the World Hockey Championships in Tampere, Finland, 4-2, and moved a step closer to the medal round with a 2-2-1 record and two games left in the preliminary round.
Defending champion Soviet Union beat Canada, 5-3, for its fifth consecutive victory and is atop the standings. Sweden and Canada are second and third, respectively, with eight points apiece.
