COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Women’s Medley Team Takes Third at Penn Relays

The Irvine women’s distance medley relay team finished third behind Villanova and Tennessee at the Penn Relays on Thursday in Philadelphia.

Rayna Cervantes, Shelly Tochluk, Maria Akraka and Buffy Rabbitt finished in 11 minutes 13.08 seconds, breaking the school record of 11:38.91 set this season at the Long Beach Relays. The former record was set by Cervantes, Tochluk, Brigid Stirling and Rabbitt.

Villanova won for the 10th consecutive time at the meet with a time of 10:55.98 and Tennessee was second in 11:09.91.

Rabbitt’s 1,600 meters helped Irvine overtake Georgetown, which led heading into the final leg but finished fourth in 11:14.83. Akraka ran her 800-meter leg in 2:04.6, which would be under the NCAA meet qualifying standard of 2:05 in open competition.

Traci Goodrich, who hadn’t lost in the 5,000 this season, finished 12th Thursday evening in 16:52.

In the Big West Conference women’s tennis championships:

UC Irvine 6, Nevada Las Vegas 3--The fourth-seeded Anteaters swept the three doubles matches in a quarterfinal at Ojai and will face top-seeded UC Santa Barbara in a semifinal today.

Ali Yoshimoto defeated Suzi Agassi, sister of Andre Agassi, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles to run her winning streak in singles matches to 16 for the Anteaters (16-11).

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State San Bernardino 8, Southern California College 6--Frank Howell drove in two runs with a triple in the fourth inning, and later in the inning scored to tie it, 6-6. San Bernardino (22-8) scored a run in the fifth and one in the seventh. John Mounce had three hits and two runs for host Southern California College (25-20).

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 1-4, Cal Baptist 0-0--Cheri Schreck (16-5) allowed four hits and Rose Conner drove in the only run with a double in the sixth inning in the first game for the Panthers (35-9), ranked second in NCAA Division II. Conner drove in two more runs with a double in the third inning of the second game and Jacki Blake (19-4) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10.
