WEEKEND TV : Networks Get Early Start on Sweeps

The calendar still says April, but the weekend television lineup screams May sweeps.

Sunday at 9 p.m., the big three networks scramble for viewers with high-profile movies. ABC (7)(3)(10)(42) has Sylvester Stallone in “Rambo III.” CBS (2)(8) counters with a made-for-TV remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt,” featuring Mark Harmon and Margaret Welsh. And NBC (4)(36)(39) throws out the first of its two-part movie, “Switched at Birth,” starring Bonnie Bedelia, John Jackson and Ed Asner.

Elsewhere, in less-heated ratings competition, ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” celebrates its 30th anniversary Sunday at 3 p.m. (7)(3)(10)(42) with a retrospective of the series’ most memorable moments anchored by Jim McKay and Frank Gifford.

Sir David Attenborough hosts a three-hour documentary about fossils, dinosaurs and other evolutionary artifacts, “Lost Worlds, Vanished Lives,” airing on TBS (cable) Sunday at 5 p.m.

And in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War, Channel 58 will televise five episodes of “Moyers: The Arab World,” beginning at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The 2 1/2-hours of panel discussions and reports will examine Arab identity, the reshaping of the Arab world, religion’s role in Arab society, Arab literary and artistic achievements and the conflict between Arabs, Jews and the Western world.
