TV Station Wins Fight to Keep Its Film, Notes
A local TV station cannot be compelled to turn over reporter notes and film outtakes for use as evidence in the murder trial of two teen-agers accused of killing three young women in an upscale Pasadena neighborhood last month, a judge ruled Friday.
Saying that the California Shield Law protects reporters’ sources, Superior Court Judge Sandy Kriegler dismissed a motion by attorneys representing the accused, David Adkins, 16, and Burt Vincin Hebrock, 17. The attorneys had wanted KABC to turn over the documentation in connection with an interview with witness Cayle Fielder, 16, which aired on the station’s evening news April 11.
Kriegler also set hearing dates of June 18 for Adkins and June 20 for Hebrock to determine whether the teen-agers will be tried as juveniles or adults.
