A 17-year-old ward of the California Youth Authority was stabbed five to seven times Friday at the facility in Camarillo, authorities said.

A nursing supervisor at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard confirmed Friday afternoon that a ward of the CYA was at the facility with wounds to the chest and abdomen. He was listed in serious condition.

The stabbing occurred at 10:06 a.m. during a break between classes at the CYA’s Ventura School, said Allison Zajac, school spokeswoman. Guards broke up the altercation, which Zajac described as unusual.

A prison-made shank was found in the area, she said.

Several male youths ranging in age from 17 to 20 were locked up after the incident, but it was unclear what roles they played in the stabbing, she said.

Officials also are investigating the cause of the attack. Morning classes were suspended, but they resumed in the afternoon, Zajac said.
