San Diego police arrested one man and were looking for two others who Thursday night robbed and beat an East San Diego man, who suffered serious head injuries, police said.

John Catlin, 20, of East San Diego was arrested and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and robbery, said Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson.

The man who was beaten, Bien Dung, 22, was listed in good condition Friday and was expected to be removed from the intensive care unit of Mercy Hospital by Monday, a hospital spokesman said.

The attack occurred at 8 p.m. Thursday as Dung was returning to his car after cashing a check at the Check Cashing Store at Fairmount and University avenues, Robinson said.

Catlin and two others approached him and demanded his money, Robinson said. When Dung refused, one of the men beat him on the head with a hammer, Robinson said.

The men escaped with $315, but Catlin was caught when he returned to the scene and was identified by a witness, Robinson said.
