PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Gets Past El Toro, ClinchesFirstTitle

Capistrano Valley clinched its first South Coast League title by defeating El Toro in four games Friday at El Toro High School.

Capistrano Valley won, 15-12, 15-4, 4-15, 15-7. Capistrano Valley has played boys’ volleyball since 1978, finishing in second place last season and third in 1989.

Brian Goodshaw had 14 kills and four blocks for the Cougars, who improved to 14-0, 8-0 in league. Eric Olson had 41 assists and three aces and Vance Hickin had nine kills and five blocks.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 3, University 2--Krister Olsson had 22 kills and six blocks, Randy Gilbert had 16 kills and four blocks, and Ryan Rauch had 55 assists and seven kills for host Woodbridge (12-2, 7-1), which won, 15-11, 7-15, 15-8, 10-15, 15-8.

Newport Harbor 3, Saddleback 0--Pardis Ghorbani had eight kills, and Steve Walker had 36 assists for visiting Newport Harbor (11-3, 7-1), which won, 15-6, 15-9, 15-10.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 3, Bishop Amat 0--Luke Halbur had 10 kills, Sean Elward had 34 assists, and Matt Strottman had eight kills for visiting Mater Dei (8-5, 5-4), which won, 15-11, 16-14, 15-8.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 3, El Dorado 0--Brad Goldston had 11 kills, and Chris Pitzak had 23 assists for visiting Esperanza (13-0, 6-0), which won, 15-10, 15-8, 15-3.

Cypress 3, Los Alamitos 1--B.J. Ewen had 19 kills, Gary Kaklia had 10 kills and Jason Kirkham had seven kills and four blocks for visiting Cypress (8-7, 3-4), which won, 14-16, 15-6, 15-13, 15-13.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Brad Huss had 11 kills, and Joe Vu had nine kills for host La Quinta (7-6, 6-6), which won, 15-1, 15-4, 15-10.

Pacifica 3, Garden Grove 0--Jim Green had 16 blocks, and Mike Shoemaker had 22 assists for visiting Pacifica (9-6, 8-4), which won, 17-15, 15-4, 15-13. It was the first league loss for Garden Grove (11-1 in league).

Santiago 3, Kennedy 1--Noa Utu had 12 kills for visiting Santiago (8-4), which won, 16-14, 15-5, 13-15, 15-8.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Anaheim 0--Dan Melia had 13 kills for visiting Valencia (14-0, 8-0), which won, 15-9, 15-1, 15-6.

Villa Park 3, Canyon 2--Tim Mitchell had 22 kills and five service aces, Craig Smith had 15 kills, and Vartan Ouzounian had 13 kills and 33 assists for Villa Park (5-8, 4-4), which won, 15-2, 14-16, 15-4, 12-15, 15-5. Canyon (4-12, 1-8) was led by Tom Bottiaux, who had 13 kills.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 3, Estancia 1--Eric Davis had 16 kills, and Aaron Cook had 10 as host Laguna Hills (8-6, 5-3) won, 15-13, 7-15, 15-4, 15-9.

Costa Mesa 3, Century 0--Neal Williams was 20 of 20 serving, Mike Degrazio had 19 kills, and Khang Lai had 13 blocks for host Costa Mesa (2-10, 2-6), which won, 15-10, 15-8, 15-6.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 3, Westminster 0--Andy Kijewski had eight kills, and Jeff Baker had four aces and 10 digs for host Huntington Beach (14-1, 10-0), which won, 15-9, 15-13, 15-9. Huntington Beach clinched at least a tie for the league title.
