MOON WALK TALK: Speaking of behind-the-scenes pop publishing dealings, the same firm publishing the Geffen book is also releasing an unauthorized bio of Michael Jackson. Called “Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness,” it reportedly focuses on Jackson’s eccentricities and hidden private life. (The book is written by Randy Taraborrelli, who wrote a tell-all book about Diana Ross in 1989.) But Birch Lane Press isn’t letting anyone get a sneekpeek at the book, which is due out May 12. In fact, to land an early copy of the book, journalists are required to sign a written agreement promising not to leak excerpts, discuss the book with any third parties and honor a mutually agreed upon date for publication of reviews or author interviews. So far, a Birch Lane exec says, the New York Times, “Geraldo,” the Philadelphia Enquirer and “Entertainment Tonight” have signed agreements, while USA Today has refused. . . . And the Broken Homes, who are leaving MCA Records, will be showcasing some new material at the Coconut Teaszer for three nights beginning May 8 (with bands like Rhino Bucket and Lock Up also on the bills).
