COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC, Golden West Win Conference Swim Titles

Orange Coast won the men’s and women’s title in the Orange Empire Conference and Golden West did the same in the South Coast Conference in swimming finals held Saturday.

OCC won the men’s title with 870 points and the women’s title with 731 in the meet at Saddleback College. Golden West won the men’s title with 901 points and the Golden West women won with 813.5 points at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Orange Coast set conference records in the women’s 200 freestyle (1:42.21), the women’s 200 medley relay (1:55.37) and the men’s 400 freestyle relay (3:10.90). Jason Bourland of OCC set a conference record in the 100 freestyle (46.56) and teammate Paul Barrera also set a record in the 200 butterfly (1:53.74).

Ray Turner of Cypress set a conference record in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.81).

The Golden West men’s 400 freestyle set a conference record with a time of 3:06.66. Marc Rinzler won the 200 backstroke (1:59.07), Dave Johnson won the 200 butterfly (1:54.83), Jeff Kudo won the 200 breaststroke (2:11.52) and Jewell Dietrich won the 1,650 freestyle (16:41.07) for Golden West.

Katie Egan won the 100 freestyle (54.97), Kristine Hansen won the 100 backstroke (1:04.16), Lisa Hadfield won the 100 butterfly (58.86) and Karen Rothery won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.58).

In the Ojai tournament:

Saddleback players advance--Esteban Saba and Scott Hansen, both of Saddleback, advanced to today’s singles final. Saba, the No. 6-seeded player, scored two upsets Saturday.

First he defeated second-seeded Steve Arnott of Golden West, 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Saba then beat fourth-seeded Jean Barnard Keen of Santa Monica, 7-5, 6-3.

Hansen, the No. 3-seeded player, beat Chan Ly of Long Beach, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and Chris Henderson of Grossmont, 7-6, 6-2, in the semifinals. The final is at 8 a.m. today.
