NHL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS : Canadiens Win in Overtime to Force Game 7
MONTREAL — Shayne Corson, who tied the game late in the third period, scored the winner at 17:47 of overtime as the Montreal Canadiens stayed alive in the NHL playoffs with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night.
The victory tied the series at 3-3 and sent it back to Boston for Game 7 Monday night.
After rookie Jeff Lazaro gave Boston a 2-1 lead in the third period, Corson sent the game into overtime when he scored with 4:06 left in regulation.
In the overtime, Corson scored from the lower circle while being hooked by a Bruins’ player. As he was falling, Corson swiped at the puck, which hit the crossbar. The puck bounced past Boston goaltender Andy Moog. The goal was Corson’s ninth of the playoffs.
Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy kept his team in the game with a fine overtime period as the Bruins outshot the Canadiens, 12-9, in the extra period.
The Canadiens outshot the Bruins overall, 41-34.
The Canadiens are seeking to beat Boston in the Adams Division final for the second time in three years. The Bruins want their third division title in four years over Montreal.
Montreal’s Stephan Lebeau and Boston’s Don Sweeney exchanged goals in the first period.
Lebeau broke the ice on the power play 4:44 into the opening period, taking advantage of confusion at the Boston line to sneak in alone, take Russ Courtnall’s feed and beat Moog at the side of the net.
Sweeney tied it at 8:06 when Stephane Richer lost the puck at the Boston blue line, Lyle Odelein failed to cover and the Bruins’ defenseman went in alone with a burst of speed and beat Roy between the pads.
Moog then stopped Lebeau on a breakaway at the 15-minute mark, one of several fine saves as he held the Bruins in the game through the first two periods despite being outshot, 26-14.
Lazaro took a pass from Randy Burridge and drilled a shot that caught the top corner on the near side 1:26 into the third period.
Corson took a feed from Richer and had two whacks at the puck to get it past Moog at 15:56.
