BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Heckler Derides Polonia, Angers Rader

Angel Manager Doug Rader had a stern lecture for a fan who verbally harassed Angel outfielder Luis Polonia during the first two games of the series.

The fan, whose seat overlooks the runway leading from the visiting clubhouse to the field, has been ejected from the Oakland Coliseum several times for comments directed at players, including Willie Wilson and Roger Clemens. He derided Polonia for his conviction two years ago on charges of having sex with an underage girl in Milwaukee. Polonia served time in jail and was placed on probation for that offense.

When the fan told Rader he had the right to say what he wanted, Rader replied, “It’s your right, but it’s improper behavior. Why would you want to say things like that?”

After the Angels’ last game in Oakland last season, Polonia was accused of slapping a fan who taunted him about his past. Charges were not filed. Of his latest tormentor, Polonia said: “If he wants to say anything about what happened to me or about the game, that’s all right. But don’t get nasty.”

Donnie Hill left Sunday’s game with a sprained left thumb. The injury occurred in the fifth inning, when Jim Abbott tried to pick Dave Henderson off second and Hill, playing second in place of Luis Sojo, had his hand bent back while trying to snare the throw. Hill’s status is day to day. . . . Dave Parker’s first-inning double gave him an RBI in four consecutive games. He had only two in his previous 14 games. . . . Sunday was the first time Junior Felix didn’t start in center field. Felix, who is two for 21 and had slumped to .194, was inserted into the lineup in the bottom of the sixth. . . . Jack Howell started in left field for the first time since June 14, 1989. Polonia started in center field for the first time this season. He played there 14 times last season.
