COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Boyd Pitches 15th Shutout for Fullerton

Tiffany Boyd pitched her 15th shutout of the season and scored the winning run for Cal State Fullerton in the first game of a Big West Conference softball doubleheader against Hawaii Saturday at Fullerton.

Boyd (30-5), a Woodbridge High graduate, allowed five hits and struck out five in winning her sixth consecutive game. She scored the game’s only run on a single by Melissa Hadfield in the eighth inning.

Ann Van Dortrecht (15-3) shut out Hawaii, 4-0, on five hits in the second game and the Titans (48-12-1, 22-7-1 in conference) swept the four-game series with Hawaii (29-21, 13-17). Fullerton, ranked fourth in NCAA Division I, has won nine consecutive games.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

UC Riverside 3-3, Chapman 0-8--After managing only two seventh-inning hits in the first game, Chapman, ranked second in Division II, woke up in the second game to remain in first place in the conference. With two games remaining--a doubleheader Tuesday with last-place Cal State Dominguez Hills--the Panthers (38-10, 9-5) are two games ahead of Cal State Bakersfield (9-7 in conference) in the loss column.

Riverside (8-8 in conference) scored three unearned runs in the first game to defeat Cheri Schreck (17-6).

In the second game, Sandy Olivas hit her 13th home run of the season, which ties her Division II-leading total of last season. She also leads the nation this year.

Christy Wurster had three hits, including a double, and an RBI and Laura Papadakis had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for the Panthers. Jacki Blake (21-4) earned the victory.

In Big West Conference baseball:

UC Santa Barbara 6, UC Irvine 5 (10 innings)--Santa Barbara scored a run in the ninth to tie the score and a run in the 10th to win at Irvine. In the 10th, Irvine shortstop Joe Furukawa dived to stop a grounder up the middle by Mike Clapinski, but Dusty Madsen scored from third when Furukawa threw Clapinski out.

The Gauchos (26-21, 6-9), whose first four batters had 11 of the team’s 16 hits, scored a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Steve Waco.

Mike Goodcase had two hits, including a two-run home in the sixth that tied the score, 4-4, for the Anteaters (21-28, 3-12). Irvine took a 5-4 lead in the eighth on Steve Ott’s sacrifice fly.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

Fresno State wins--The Bulldogs won at No. 1 and No. 6 singles and won their first conference tennis championship at Ojai. Fresno State finished with 44 points to 40 for second-place UC Irvine, which had won the past four conference titles.

Marcos Garzo won the No. 1 singles title and was named the conference player of the year and Mike Noel won at No. 6 for Fresno. Brett Hansen-Dent won the No. 2 singles championship, Brett Stern won the No. 5 title, and Neel Grover and Charles Wheeler won the No 2. doubles title for Irvine.

UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Long Beach tied for third with 37 points.
