The city of Ventura and two county water agencies have scheduled public meetings Wednesday to outline an initial environmental assessment of different ways to bring more water to the area.

Ventura, the Casitas Municipal Water District and the United Water Conservation District also plan to ask for public comments on its proposed full-blown environmental study of a pipeline to connect the county to state water supplies and other long-term solutions to the drought.

The meetings are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room of Ventura City Hall, 501 Poli St., and at 7:30 p.m. at Fillmore City Hall, 524 Sespe Ave. State law requires the meetings to allow public comment on the project before an environmental study begins.

Building a pipeline is one option, with several routes under consideration. State water could also be released down the Santa Clara River to replenish underground reserves. A third option is to build a desalination plant. A fourth possibility is to do nothing.
