The Ventura County Board of Supervisors is scheduled Tuesday to consider a request by federal officials to build a 24-hour weather observation station at Oxnard Airport.

The weather station would be one of 1,300 proposed for airports nationwide by the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The stations would be automated and would work nonstop to update weather forecasts and report significant weather changes quickly and accurately, according to a report by Marshall A. MacKinen, the county airport administrator.

The proposed weather stations would be used by various federal agencies, including the military, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.

NOAA is asking the Board of Supervisors for a license to build an automated station on a 2,000-square-foot area at least 250 feet from the airport runways.

The National Weather Service would install and maintain the weather station.
