State Approves Plan for Tern Nesting Site
County officials won state approval to establish a nesting site for the California least tern on Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey, officials said Monday.
The project, to be completed by the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project, was authorized last week by the Coastal Commission and state Parks and Recreation Department.
State parks officials will decide later whether the nesting site, which will be the second in the area, will become a permanent site when the agency reviews the master plan for Dockweiler State Beach, said Ted Reed, director of the county Department of Beaches and Harbors. The new site is needed because an established colony about half a mile away on Venice Beach has become overpopulated, said Larry Charness, chief of planning for the department.
