HEAD COPS: These are tough times to be a top cop named Gates. County Sheriff Brad Gates is used to outsiders confusing him with Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates. But things are worse now after the videotaped Rodney King beating by L.A. police brought demands for Daryl Gates to resign. . . . At a recent Washington conference, a college president called the sheriff “Daryl” and asked about “the problem going on in Los Angeles.” All the sheriff could do was reply, “my name isn’t Daryl, it’s Brad.”
