The Environmental Protection Agency Monday awarded $46 million to schools around the country to help get rid of hazardous asbestos.

The agency received 406 applications and picked the 123--involving 272 removal projects at 201 schools--that posed the most danger. The money includes $12.8 million in grants and $33.5 million in interest-free loans.

Asbestos is used for insulation and fireproofing. It becomes hazardous when it crumbles and its fibers are inhaled. It can cause lung cancer and other diseases.
