Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Child-Restraint Law Stirs Homicide Trial

Jury selection began in Miami for the vehicular-homicide trial of Ramiro de Jesus Rodriguez, a Nicaraguan refugee whose 3-year-old daughter was killed Aug. 3 while riding in the family car unrestrained. A prosecutor said Rodriguez, 30, was to blame for the accident; a defense lawyer said the father was being “crucified” to teach other parents a lesson. Both sides said they believed it was the first case in the nation of a parent facing a criminal trial for failing to restrain a child killed in an auto accident.
