A police officer injured both ankles Thursday when he jumped from the roof of a house to help other officers who were scuffling with a suspected parole violator.

The injured officer, identified by Huntington Beach police only as S. Lopez, was treated and released from Pacifica Community Hospital in Huntington Beach.

Police Lt. Jeff Cope said Lopez was participating in a stakeout of Darrick G. Crawford, whom police were seeking in a series of local burglaries and in an alleged parole violation in Wisconsin.

About 4:05 p.m., officers followed a car in which Crawford was a passenger near the corner of 12th Street and Crest Avenue. When motorcycle officers gestured for the unidentified driver to pull over, Cope said, Crawford jumped from the moving car and ran off, with officers in pursuit.

Lopez climbed onto a roof in the 1400 block of 14th Street and saw Crawford hiding in the back yard. When other officers cornered Crawford, there was a scuffle, and Lopez jumped down from the roof to help, Cope said.

Crawford was arrested on suspicion of burglary and also held without bail in the alleged parole violation.
