A note to Allan Malamud about Wayne Gretzky’s performance: Granted, no goals and five assists may not be superstar numbers, but in this era of overpaid, under-performing, whining athletes, Wayne Gretzky stands out as an anomaly. Unquestionably skating hurt, and dazed by painkillers, he nevertheless performed without excuse or apology. He deserves praise rather than ridicule.
