So What if the Developer Loses?

I just read the article “Irvine Co. Tries to Forestall Bid to Protect Bird” (April 25) about the California gnatcatcher.

The Irvine Co. is one of the richest corporations in the West. We shouldn’t even care about how much it or its contracted developers stand to lose.

This issue is not just about a small bird. It’s much more important. The California coastline and especially the inside canyons have been disappearing, obliterated almost completely by the out-of-control growth of new housing.

From where I live in Orange, south almost to San Diego, there is almost no open shoreline. The canyons--which were once home to coyotes, foxes, raccoons, resident and migrant birds--are being covered with concrete. This is within my lifetime, and I am 12.
