A Guide to the Best of Southern California : FOOD : Bread Winner
The Diamond Bakery won’t say what makes its Fridays-only “special egg bread” so special.
They’ll tell you it’s made for a special occasion--the Jewish Sabbath dinner--but when it comes to the ingredients, they get coy.
Ask if it has more eggs--after all, it is egg bread--they shrug.
“Secrets” make it special, says general manager Steve Rubinstein.
Ask him for a description and he says it’s “rich, full and to die for.” Ask him to compare it to the regular egg bread and he can only use analogies.
“It’s the difference between skiing powder and ice,” he says, “the difference between driving a Porsche and a Honda.” However you choose to drive to Fairfax Boulevard to try it, get there early. Anything worth dying for that costs $2.10 sells out early.
