Two men died in separate traffic accidents Sunday, one a pedestrian who ran across a freeway near downtown and the other a Spring Valley man whose car plunged down a 200-foot embankment.

In the first, an unidentified man in his early 30s was struck and killed by a small pickup truck as he ran east across Interstate 5 near where it crosses Market Street about 11:45 a.m. The driver was not cited.

The victim was Latino, 5-foot-8 and 208 pounds, said Robert Engel, medical examiner investigator. He had numerous healed scars on his abdomen that may have been from stab wounds, Engel said.

In the other traffic fatality, Rigoberto Ramirez, 45, of Spring Valley died about 1:10 p.m. when his car plunged down an embankment off Interstate 8, Engel said.

Ramirez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from his car and died at the scene, Engel said. The accident occurred in Descanso, about 1 1/2 miles east of California 79, Engel said.
