San Diego State senior Wendy Kaupp picked a good time to win her first collegiate golf tournament as she won a sudden-death playoff to capture the Western Athletic Conference championship.

Kaupp, the only SDSU golfer to qualify for the championships, sank a two-foot birdie putt on the par-four first hole at Hobble Creek Golf Course in Provo, Utah, to beat Robin Barry of Brigham Young. Both finished regulation play with scores of 154 in the tournament, which was shortened to two rounds because of rain.

Kaupp shot a 79 on the par-72 course in the first round and came back with a 75 in the second round. Barry shot 73 after an opening-round 81. Kaupp, from Los Gatos, will likely receive an at-large berth in the NCAA championships.
