BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Palacios, Pirates Beat Reds, 3-1

Vicente Palacios limited the Cincinnati Reds to three hits in seven-plus innings and the Pirates beat the National League champions, 3-1, Monday night at Pittsburgh.

Palacios (2-0) gave up one hit--a double by Eric Davis in the first inning--until Davis led off the eighth with a home run.

Palacios walked seven and twice pitched out of bases-loaded situations.

Bobby Bonilla had two run-scoring singles for the Pirates.

Montreal 10, San Francisco 4--Kevin Mitchell of the Giants hit his ninth and 10th home runs, but the Expos hit three homers in their victory at Montreal.

Delino DeShields, Marquis Grissom and Tim Wallach homered in the fourth inning and Larry Walker homered in the seventh. The Giants lost their sixth in seven games.

Chicago 4, Houston 3--George Bell hit a two-run homer in a four-run fourth inning and the Cubs beat the Astros at Houston.

Greg Maddux (4-1) gave up four hits in seven innings. Former Astro Dave Smith got the save.

Seattle 4, New York 2--Ken Griffey Sr. homered and Ken Griffey Jr. had three hits as the Mariners beat the Yankees for the third time in four games at Seattle.

A crowd of 24,210 raised attendance for the series to 125,240, a Kingdome record.
