A pilot who crash-landed his airplane near Rose Valley Road in upper Ojai walked away from the accident virtually unharmed, authorities said.

The Civil Air Patrol was alerted about 6 p.m. Monday through a satellite that picked up a signal from the plane’s emergency transmitter, spokesman Bob Fowler said. Searchers found the heavily damaged plane at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Fowler said.

A nearby rancher said the pilot, identified as Walter Egbert, had used his telephone after the crash and then walked away. He had a cut on his hand but otherwise appeared to be uninjured, Fowler said.

Authorities with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted and will conduct an investigation.

Egbert’s hometown is unknown, but he flew out of Santa Paula Airport, Fowler said.
