Hacienda Heights Librarian Receives County Award
Charles B. Kaufman, community library manager for the Hacienda Heights Library, has been named Los Angeles County Librarian of the Year.
Kaufman’s duties include working with support groups, educators, artists, city officials and business owners. He also speaks at schools and delivers books to the homebound and older adults.
Kaufman, who lives in Covina, has served in Hacienda Heights for six years and has worked for the county public library for 18 years.
* Phyllis Sievers, a volunteer at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, has been named 1991 chairwoman of the California Assn. of Hospitals and Health Systems Committee on Volunteer Services.
Sievers has put in more than 6,000 hours of service at the medical center since she became a volunteer in 1979.
* Victor Franco, public relations manager for Miller Brewing Co. in Irwindale, has received the Black American Cinema Society Award for his contributions in furthering African-American participation in cinematic arts.
The award is presented annually by the Western States Black Research Center, sponsored by Miller Brewing.
* Kerry Walsh and Anita Krause, both of Pasadena, are among eight aspiring operatic singers who have been chosen by the Pasadena Opera Guild to receive $1,000 scholarships each.
Walsh, a 25-year-old soprano, graduated from Juilliard School of Music. Krause, a mezzo-soprano, graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois and earned her master’s degree at USC.
The guild promotes community interest in opera, develops youth programs and helps young singers further their careers. The scholarship winners were selected from among singers who performed before the guild during the 1990-91 season.
* Carl Preston was appointed to the San Gabriel Economic Development Committee by the City Council on Tuesday.
Preston, owner of Victor’s Restaurant in San Gabriel, replaces Roger Chen, who resigned for family health reasons.
