Digital Equipment Corp., a virtual bystander in the personal computer revolution, hopes to change that image next week when it unveils a line of powerful machines under an alliance with Intel Corp.

Analysts do not expect Digital to quickly become a dominant player in the personal computer market but say the strategy will help the company build on its success designing networks for the small desktop machines.

Digital has released few details about the products scheduled to be unveiled Tuesday in New York. Michelle Hoey, a company spokeswoman, said Digital would announce a “broad-based family of network PCs.”

She also said Digital President Kenneth Olsen will be joined by Intel Chairman Andrew Grove at the announcement.

Analysts said Digital plans to introduce a high-performance personal computer made by Intel according to Digital’s specifications.
