The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has approved a plan to add 7,850 parking spaces to a city-owned lot adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport.

The expansion at Lot B, which borders the airport on the east and is bounded by Aviation and La Cienega boulevards, is scheduled to begin in January. The lot will be enlarged from 6,220 to 10,470 spaces during the first phase of construction, which will last about six months, said Cora Fossett, an administrator with the commission. An additional 3,600 spaces will be added in a project scheduled to begin in January, 1993.

The plan will provide for an expected rapid increase in passengers using the airport. In 1990, 45 million passengers used the airport. The commission estimates that the figure will increase to 65 million by the year 2000. Fees for the airport’s current 25,000 parking spaces represent the largest source of income at the airport, generating $52 million in 1990.
