Toreras’ Fuller Advances in Tennis Championships
Tonya Fuller of the University of San Diego advanced to the second round of the NCAA women’s tennis championships at Stanford with a 6-3, 7-6 victory Monday over Noelle Porter of Pepperdine.
Fuller, ranked 21st in the nation, was the only one of four local players to get pastfirst-round opponents.
Fuller’s teammate, Tuck Kacharoen, ranked 36th, was defeated by Paloma Collantes of Mississippi, 6-1, 6-1.
Eva Olivarez of San Diego State lost to Susan Sabo of Duke, 6-2, 6-2, and Nicole Storto of SDSU was defeated by Heather Willens of Stanford, 6-1, 6-2.
Fuller was to have played a second-round match later in the day, but a five-hour rain delay pushed back the tournament. Only six second-round singles matches were completed. Fuller will play today against Stephanie London of USC.
The UC San Diego men’s team lost to UC Santa Cruz, 8-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division III team championships at Claremont.
Brian Beattie and Chad Moore were the lone winners in doubles for UCSD, which will play Washington & Lee (Virginia) in a consolation match today.
BASEBALL
U.S. International defeated San Diego State, 7-3, at SDSU’s Smith Field. It was the third victory in a row--spanning eight days--for the Gulls (16-30) over SDSU (39-18).
USIU’s Mike Murphy was two for five with two RBIs, and David Payetta (3-3) won in relief. SDSU used nine pitchers.
